Are You Confusing Your “Goal” With Your Target?

I met with a young lady recently that told me she was shy, timid and not good at speaking in front of people. She said that she was nervous and would freeze up when called upon to speak before a group.

What this young lady doesn’t realize is that what she told me—that is her goal. That’s right! That is her goal to be shy, timid, to not be good at speaking in front of people and to be nervous and freeze up before an audience. Inadvertently and unwittingly, she has made that her goal/target.

Her self-image because of what she tells herself; that she is“those things” when it comes to speaking in front of people actually sets that up and pursues it as her goal to be accomplished. Additionally, as she tells herself those things about herself, she pictures and visualizes herself in front of people BEING those things (shy, timid, nervous and freezing up). Consequently, the self-image “says” ‘Oh! That is what I am supposed to be. That is who I am.’—and her mission is accomplished.   So she hits her target!

See how marvelously we are engineered for success?!? She’s achieving her “goal” and not even realizing it. That’s how our goal seeking mechanism works. The self-image takes those instructions and sends the “work order” to our goal seeking mechanism (brain and nervous system) to make her shy, timid, nervous, and freeze up when she gets up to address a group of people. Goal achieved!

Unfortunately for this ambitious young lady, she is confusing her goal with her target. In fact, she would dispute that and say “No. My goal is to be confident and to speak eloquently in front of people.”—but that is only her wish or her hope to do so. Her actual “goal” that she is setting for herself by communicating in what she says and what she imagines becomes her actual target—and that is exactly what she accomplishes.

Are You Walking Around In A State of Hypnosis?

Have you ever considered just what you might be capable of if you weren’t hypnotized by your self-image with limiting beliefs about yourself??

In the book, Intuition: Your Secret Power, a hypnotist is quoted as saying: “Clients visiting me hoping that I will put them in a trance and fix their lives. In fact many of them live in a trance and need a dose of reality.”

That’s the power of belief.  We literally walk around each day hypnotized by the beliefs we have about ourselves and what we imagine to be true about our environment.  That’s why I sometimes call myself the “De-hypnotist”.  I help de-hypnotize my clients(in a manner of speaking, I’m not a “hypnotist”) from the beliefs that are limiting or holding them back or from ones that simply aren’t true about themselves.  This is done so that we can install new beliefs that open the flood gates up to amazing abilities to achieve.

Consider this…

Do you have a fear of doing something?  Or perhaps simply have a fear of something…a phobia if you will?  For this illustration, let’s stick with “doing” something.  Do you have a fear of doing something…anything at all?

Do you believe that a highly skilled hypnotist could put you in a trance, remove that fear, and have you doing what you fear with ease??  Most would say yes and agree that this could certainly happen and they would be correct!

So should that occur, the hypnotist would actually be de-hypnotizing you  from the belief that you have that empowers that fear which removes the block and releases you to do that which you fear…with ease!

Is the hypnotist giving you new powers and abilities by hypnotizing you?  Do his words have some sort of magical power?  NO and NO!  The abilities that you would demonstrate under “hypnosis” are not new to you.  They were there all along!  You are able to do that which you fear (or perhaps anything you’d like to do) because you have in effect been de-hypnotized from the belief that you could not or were unable to do it…thereby RELEASING the ability you already had within you to do it.

So are you walking around in a state of hypnosis?  Are you in the trance of your beliefs?  Are they keeping you from achieving or doing something that you really want to do or achieve?

The Law of Direction Trumps The Law of Attraction

Since the release of the hit movie, The Secret, the Law of Attraction has become such a hot topic.  It’s become an industry really all to itself from those who study, follow and apply it’s principles, from coaches, to certified law of attraction practitioners and thousand of others.  It’s been a good thing!  The “discovery” and awareness of the Law of Attraction and how we as human beings are responsible for everything about our lives has been a great awakening for many.

I believe in the Law of Attraction. But it doesn’t really matter if I believe it or not.  Just like it wouldn’t matter if I decided not to believe in gravity.  It’s still there and has an affect on my life regardless of my belief in such.  I am attracting or drawing to myself those things that I believe and focus my thoughts on the greatest majority of the time.

LawofAttraction1

Still, I believe that the Law of Attraction is misunderstood in many ways and because of that, it is “misapplied” in terms of our focus.  The misunderstanding I believe comes from simply forgetting or perhaps not knowing what is really behind the Law of Attraction.  I call it the Law of Direction.  At it’s basic core the Law of Attraction is simple.  It is simply that like attracts like.  That is a fact.  But in our lives as human beings, the Law of Direction powers the Law of Attraction.  That’s why I say that the Law of Direction trumps the Law of Attraction.

Why?  I’ll explain.  The understanding of the Law of Direction and how it actually powers the Law of Attraction in our lives would help and empower so many people that think it’s just about “attracting” circumstances & things (et.al) into our lives by way of attraction.  Things ARE attracted to us but because of how we apply the Law of Direction.  This empowerment by applying and switching one’s focus to the Law of Direction instead could have a profound effect on the lives of so many people.

So exactly what is the Law of Direction?  The simple truth of the matter is that we as human beings are designed as goal seeking creatures.  We were literally engineered for success.  Some may say that they don’t have goals and may disagree with my assertion that we are goal seeking creatures.  That would be an erroneous assessment.  We all have goals whether we realize it or not.  It’s just that either individually we are either choosing and setting our own goals or someone else is.  We all necessary have goals.  Period.

3d people - man, person with a binocular and word "goal".

3d people – man, person with a binocular and word “goal”.

Animals have goals too.  Theirs we refer to as their instincts or as I call them their success instinct.  In animals, their goals are hard wired as in their survival instinct, procreation to ensure species survival and so on.  We, as humans, have the ability to CHOOSE our goals or “direction”.  Hence, the Law of Direction.  THAT is what separates us.  Since it is in our very nature to seek after goals, it is imperative that we have them.  That we have a Direction!

The Law of Direction says that we must be seeking after something and in fact we are in virtually every waking moment.  It could be something as basic and simple as deciding to get out of bed to our obviously more complex and high “goals” of achievement.

The truth of our goal seeking nature that we must have some sort of direction is critical to understand.  Our goals or direction determine what in fact is “attracted” to us.  Things do come to us by way of attraction.  It is however because we have set that direction or goal for such and as a result the Law of Attraction is activated and we in our “direction” attract what we seek.  We are actually attracted to the things we set our direction to rather than them being attracted to us.

Some may say they have attracted things in their lives that they would never consider to be a “goal” and never set as a goal.  To clear that up, would require you to understand what you focus on whether good or bad and whatever is your dominant thought through either desire(want) or worry(what you don’t want) is communicated to your subconscious as the goal…whether it is something you “want” or something you don’t want.  Focusing on something negative through worry, for instance, is a sure-fire way to inadvertently communicate an unwanted thing to your subconscious as what it will perceive is the goal to be achieved.  Therefore, if you’ve “attracted” unwanted things in your life, I would submit to you that you have set that as your goal or direction through improper focus.
So YES, situations and things are attracted to us in our lives but through the direction or goals we have set either intentionally or unintentionally.  How are you using the Law of Direction?  You’re using it every moment of every day whether you know it or not AND intentionally or unintentionally.  You choose!

The bible says in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish:”  It doesn’t say where people don’t attract the right things to themselves they perish.  It says without VISION…in other words, DIRECTION; GOALS.  It’s the Law of Direction, not the Law of Attraction that deserves your focus.  Where is your focus?  What are your goals?  What is your Direction?

6 Words That Can Free Or Imprison Your Abilities To Achieve

Six words.  That’s it.  Well, actually it’s twelve.  It’s two SETS of six words that can free or imprison your abilities to achieve.  The ultimate block to improving your performance expressed in six words.   It’s all in how you use them.  So what are these two sentences of six words with such power?

Mirror image

Your self-image defines and limit your possibilities.  You communicate to your self image with what you think, believe, imagine and say.  Too many times people carelessly express the six word sentence, “That’s just the way I am” when speaking about themselves regarding something that they believe and have accepted as a truth about themselves.  All too often, unfortunately this truth they affirm by saying, That’s just the way I am, is actually in error…or at the very least is a change they could make with different language.

That’s just the way I am.  I don’t like getting up and speaking in front of people…that’s just the way I am.  I’m not good at selling…that’s just the way I am.  I have a hard time taking other people’s criticism…that’s just the way I am.  I’m just not meant to succeed in a big way…that’s just the way I am.  (Insert your limiting belief here)…that’s just the way I am.

Each of those “beliefs” one might have about one’s self are in error…BUT they become true for the person who affirms with those six words…that’s just the way I am.  Sadly, most simply accept as true these or other limiting beliefs about themselves and literally imprison their self-image by affirming to themselves…that’s just the way I am.

WRONG!

The “truth” lies in the following six words which when used purposefully can liberate the self-image.  I’m what I decide to be.  When we realize and accept the profound truth “I’m what I decide to be”, anyone can change, alter, improve any aspect of their personality that they wish.  We simply are who we DECIDE to be.  Who have you decided to be as a person…in any area of your life…personally or professionally?  You can decide to change.  You can decide to be any way you wish to.  Say to yourself right now…I’m who I decide to be.

Six words…okay it’s twelve…WAIT!…it’s really EIGHTEEN!!!  With the follow six words, you can effect the changes in yourself that you want to change.  Ready for these??…

I’m the kind of person who…I’m the kind of person who.  Finish that sentence in any way you’d like to affirm to yourself in a powerful way what you want to believe to be true about yourself.  This powerful technique used purposefully will free and grow the self-image into the person that you want to be.

I’m the kind of person who…LOVES speaking in front of crowds and inspiring them.  I’m the kind of person who…believes that I am as good as anyone!  I’m the kind of person who…whose self-image is healthy and strong so that I can accomplish anything that I want.  I’m the kind of person who…how would you finish your sentence???

reachingthetop

Are you imprisoning or freeing your self-image?  Let me finish by asking you this six word question…Which six words are you using?

3 Steps To Building An Inspired Team

Any investment made in your team’s growth as a whole and/or individually is a wise one.  A powerful personal and professional development system will develop and apply untapped potential that lies dormant within each one of us.  Awakening this in any number of ways in the individuals of your team and collectively with the focus on proper goals and achievement can light a fire under a team that can have them performing like never before.  Here are 3 simple steps towards that end:

Step 1 – Goal Setting and Achieving
There’s been so much said and taught about goals over the years yet so much of it is so unproductive.  Why is this so?  Mostly because goals are focused too low.  They aren’t inspiring.  Goals needs to be BIG! They need to inspire us. Goals need to run roughshod through your mind at night where you can’t seem to stop thinking about them and you’re excited to wake up each morning.  They need to add a dimension of creativity to our lives.  If you know how to achieve a particular goal, it’s probably too small.  So step #1 is BIG and INSPIRING goals.

Step 2 – Understanding What Drives Peak Performance
As human beings, we will always act, feel and perform according to what we imagine to be true about ourselves and our environment.  These “imaginings” or beliefs are the foundations of our paradigms.  Our paradigms are what controls our behavior which delivers the results we receive.  A team going for a goal with varying levels of belief cannot perform at it’s peak.  So step #2 is simply understanding that your team’s paradigms, collectively and individually, may not be set for peak performance.  The good news in realizing this is…that can be changed!!!

Step 3 – Change The Paradigms
Most people think we perform out of sheer will power.  This is not true.  Creative imagination beats will power hands down.  We perform or fail to perform not  because of will power but because of imagination.  It is because of what we imagine or believe to be true.  Building an inspired team requires first the understanding mentioned in step 2.  Then that the creative imagination is the key to changing  these paradigms that might be holding a team member back, which in turns holds the entire team back from peak performance.  Consequently, step #3 is getting each member of your team to visualize using their creative imagination the accomplishment of that big and inspiring goal we talked about in step #1.  Paradigms are changed with strategic repetition of thought and the decision to change what one chooses to believe or imagine to be true about any given situation.

These three steps when implemented with purpose can light a fire of inspiration for what is trying to be achieved that will catapult organizational results toward any desired vision.  These three steps are 3 of 12 that I put business teams/groups through in a 13 week Goals & Results system that drives performance and brings alignment with each other and the company like nothing else out there.

Reach out to me and let’s talk about inspiring you or your team.  In 13 short weeks, you’ll be amazed at your transformation.

Raise Your Hand…If You Have Untapped Potential In You

Hands are raised everywhere.  Is yours? If it’s not, it should be.  And in your heart you know it too, don’t you?

RaiseYourHand

Regardless of the level of success we achieve, to a person, we all have untapped potential inside us.  It’s important to note that the potential you’ve been blessed with has a purpose.  It’s not there just to sit there.  We were not put on this earth to have our potential untapped, unused or underutilized.  There is a purpose for your potential.

Knowing and realizing this should be a wake up call for us all.  If we have untapped potential in us, what is our obligation?  I believe it is to seek ways to grow, to expand our reach, to stretch ourselves towards that next level of our greatness.  Not for ourselves, though we will be more fulfilled in the process, but others and the greater good that we are meant to contribute to.

I think about this very thing every day.  I think about it more in terms of my desire and mission to help others reach for and stretch their potential not so much for myself.  Though I feel that as I seek to help others tap into their greater potential, I tap into mine as well.

I know and am connected to some of the most successful and influential people in the world and each of them I know would tell me, “I can do more”.  You can do more.  You can do it!

Regardless of the level of success we have achieved, each day is like stepping into the starting blocks again.  It’s a new day to run the race again.  If you rest on your laurels and yesterday’s successes, you’re starting to regress albeit slowly…maybe even unnoticable to you.  And it’s not just you that is shortchanged, but all of those you were meant to touch, inspire, motivate, teach, and help whether directly or indirectly by you reaching inside yourself and drawing on that untapped potential.

It’s in there.  It’s time to use it!

If you want to draw on your own untapped potential or that of your team, reach out to me today.  I’m here to help. 🙂
